The Hat of a Mathematician

To kick off the course on May 8th, we had our students create their own hats using origami techniques. Prior preparation involved researching designs that were neither too easy nor too hard for children to fold in the allotted time and printing out the folding instructions. This activity got them working with their hands, moving around the class and mingling with their new classmates!

Folding time!

Folding and wearing hats!

Another goal of this activity was to stress on the importance of wearing the hat of a mathematician i.e. thinking deeply and rigorously about the course content that was to follow. By having each child choose a different hat, we wanted to convey that each of them was unique and likely to approach the questions and problems that we were going to encounter over the course in a variety of exciting ways.
